Shrink Tubing Measurements

Shrink tubing is a great option for a variety of shrink wrapping applications. We recommend it for any users wanting to shrink wrap cylindrical objects or objects that vary in length. One problem we often come across are people who are interested in using shrink tubing, but are unaware of how to measure for the right size of tubing.

Measurements can be complicated, but not if you have a detailed instructional video. We have made a short video showing how to measure for shrink tubing to ensure you have the right size needed. Remember that the tubing has a shrink rate up to 40% so a slightly larger shrink tubing is recommended.

The main thing to remember is the tubing is measured in width. We have tubing that measures from 1.5 inches wide up to 28 inches wide. The width of the tubing should be doubled to find the circumference of the film. Measure the circumference of the product being wrapped to find what type of shrink tubing you need.

Polyethylene Tubing

We are happy to announce offering a full line of polyethylene tubing for sale online. We currently offer over 120 sizes and thickness of tubing online. Poly tubing is great for packaging odd sized items, long items, or cylindrical items. We have sold PVC shrink tubing online for a long time, our poly tubing is another great option for companies to use when packaging a variety of products.

Several differences can be found between polyethylene tubing and PVC shrink tubing. All of our poly tubing options are FDA approved and can be used with food products. Our shrink tubing is not FDA approved due to the chloride found in the PVC. We have several bakeries, candy makers, and other clients that use poly tubing for primary and secondary packaging for their products.

Polyethylene tubing can be sealed on each side, but does not offer any shrink  like the shrink tubing does. This means the width of the poly tubing needs to exactly the size needed. Click here for a “how to” guide on how to measure for tubing. Do not add the recommended 10% when measuring for polyethylene tubing. We recommend a flat wire hand impulse sealer for sealing poly tubing ends. This enables users to obtain a thicker and stronger seal.

Another significant difference between the polyethylene tubing and the shrink tubing is the thickness offered in each. The polyethylene tubing is much thicker than the shrink tubing. Our shrink tubing is offered in a 1 mil thickness. The thinnest poly tubing available is a 1.5 mil. We offer up to a 6 mil poly tubing online. The 6 mil poly tubing is great for large heavy objects with sharp edges or corners. For large heavy objects, we recommend using staples or a heavy duty tape to close the ends.

All of our polyethylene tubing rolls come on 3″ cores. We offer custom quotes on any orders over 5 rolls. Call us at 1-800-441-5090 for a custom quote!

Shrink Wrap Tubing is a Great Way To Package Multiple Books

It’s common for most retail book sellers to use shrink wrap for packaging when they sell an individual book or books sets. Shrink film offers protection with a crystal clear display to show products. Different retailers prefer different types of shrink film. The most common shrink products used are shrink bags and shrink wrap tubing.

This post is about using shrink tubing to wrap multiple books at once. We prefer shrink tubing for wrapping more than one book. The tubing offers the option of sealing both ends or leaving the ends open. The open ended shrink tubing works great to hold books together. The sealer shrink tubing holds ends together as well as helps to protect the books from external elements such as: dust, moisture, etc.

We recommend using heat shrink wrap to protect books with almost all delivery methods. If you have a set that comes with its own box, placing the books in the set box and shrink wrapping the box to help protect it is a great way to ensure products will reach customers undamaged.

If the box will then be shipped, we recommend placing the shrink wrapped box in a corrugated box for extra protection during shipping. Be sure to use the proper amount of void-fill to reduce unnecessary shifting during transport.

Shrink Wrap is a Great Way to Create Your Own Book Set

What if you have two or more books that are not a set, but you would like to sell together? This happens often, such as two cook books by the same author that you would like to sell as a combo set.

Professional Packaging Helps to Make Products Appear More Valuable

Clear shrink wrap is also great for in store displays because it holds the books together while still clearly displaying the books included.

A Cost Effective Solution

The best feature about shrink wrapping your books or products for packaging is the cost. Most shrink wrapped books will cost less than a couple of pennies to wrap.

Initial costs for a low volume (1-60 packages per day) shrink wrapping process are affordable and easy to learn.

Most companies get started for around two hundred dollars.

Using economical shrink wrap will help protect your books and give your company a professional looking appearance.

Shrink Wrap Tubing & It’s Many Advantages

Shrink wrap tubing can help to protect your products the same as a centerfold shrink wrap or shrink wrap bags. Shrink wrap tubing does have several advantages in certain situations though. We will discuss that shortly. As you can see from the roll to the right, shrink wrap tubing comes on a roll and is measured in width x length. We will briefly go over some specific situations when using shrink wrap tubing would  be advantageous, and also discuss how to measure for shrink wrap tubing.

Shrink wrap tubing can help make some shrink wrap operations more efficient. Shrink wrap tubing offers the advantage of only having to seal two sides when the product is placed inside of the tube. A  recent customer offered a great example of shrink wrap tubing being more efficient than centerfold shrink wrap. They were wrapping ornate wooden spindles for retail sale. There were to be four spindles in a package. The customer had been using centerfold PVC shrink wrap to package their wooden spindles. The functionality of the centerfold shrink wrap was ideal and worked great. The problem was the centerfold shrink wrap was not efficient. The users had to put the spindles in the film and then seal three sides to start.

Shrink wrap tubing was an ideal product for their operation. Shrink wrap tubing enabled the user to slide the spindles into the tube, and seal two sides to start. After they got started only one seal was required each time they placed the spindles into the tubes.

Another specific example of when shrink wrap tubing can be advantageous to your operation, is when dealing with multiple sized products. We recently had a client that was shrink wrapping jars of multiple sizes. All of the jars were the same width, but there were more than five different heights of jars. Instead of using more than five different sizes of shrink wrap bags, the user was able to buy one roll of shrink wrap tubing to fit all jar lengths.

These are only a couple of examples how shrink wrap tubing can be beneficial over more commonly used centerfold shrink wrap and shrink wrap bags. Now let’s take a quick minute to go over how to measure for shrink wrap tubing. The easiest and best formula, is to measure the circumference of the object at it’s widest point. What ever that circumference is, add 10%, then divide by two. The number you get will be the width of shrink wrap tubing you will need. If that width is not available, don’t be afraid of going up to the next width. Shrink wrap tubing has up to a 40% shrink rate. It is always better to go with a larger size than a smaller size.

How to measure for shrink wrap

How do I know what size of shrink wrap I need? That is a common question from many of our customers. We are happy to help them out when they call, but we have come to the conclusion that an educational blog post would be helpful as well.

One of the main things to remember when deciding shrink wrap size is, shrink wrap shrinks! It’s true, the shrink film you place on your products will shrink down to 40% of its original size. That means that a larger size is always better than a smaller size.

Measuring the circumference of the object being shrink wrapped is the common trait all of these recommendations have. Circumference is defined as: the distance around a closed curve or the distance around an object.  Below are the common types of shrink wrap products we sell and the recommended way to measure for them.

Centerfold Shrink Wrap- The easiest way to measure for centerfold shrink wrap is to add the height and width, then add 2-3 inches. If a product is 10 inches wide and 4 inches tall, you would add 10+4+2=16. A 16 inch wide film would be ideal for wrapping the product. If a 16 inch film is not available, go up to the next size of film, never go down in size.

Shrink Wrap Tubing- To measure for shrink wrap tubing, measure the circumference of the objects widest point, then add 10-15 percent, then divide by two. If an object had a circumference of 10, the equation would be: 10×10%=1 then add 1 to the circumference 10+1=11 then divide by 2   11/2=5.5 inches.  A 6 inch wide shrink wrap tubing would be ideal for the object. If there are no 6 inch sizes available, feel free to increase the width of tubing to the next size.

Shrink Wrap Bags- Measuring for shrink wrap bags is very similar to measuring for shrink wrap tubing. Measure the circumference of the widest point of the object being wrapped. Then measure the length of the product being wrapped. Add 10-15% to the circumference of the width then divide by 2. If you had a product that had a width circumference of 14 inches and a length of 20 inches, the equation would be: To find width 14×10%=1.4 then add 1.4 to circumference 14+1.4=15.4 then divide by two 15.4/2= 7.7. An 8 inch wide bag. The length would be 20 inches. You would need a 8×20 inch bag to wrap the product, up-sizing is an option if that size of bag is not available.

Remember when measuring for shrink wrap bags to always consider if products will be extending out of the container being wrapped. Often times gift bags and other items being wrapped have products extending out of the basket or container, be sure to place them in the basket or container before measuring for the length.
