Frequently Asked Stretch Film Questions

Most consumers and customers always have questions about the products they are purchasing. Customers that buy as little as one case at a time and customers of our that buy pallets at a time often have common questions about our inventory, products, and performance. Below is a list of frequently asked questions with answers. If you have a questions you do not see on here, do not hesitate to call us at 1-800-441-5090.

What are the stretch film minimums for free shipping?

One full pallet of stretch film is the minimum for free shipping.

Can I mix stretch film products to make pallet quantities for free shipping?

Yes, you can mix different sizes, strengths, and colors to reach a full pallet for free shipping.

Does you have colored stretch film?

Yes, we specializes in a wide assortment of opaque and tinted films. Often a  perfect solution for product identification, inventory management, theft deterrent, etc.

What colors of stretch film do you stock?

We stock for immediate shipment, red, blue green, yellow, orange and white tinted hand film, extended core film and machine films.

We also stock black and white opaque stretch film.

What is the difference between opaque stretch film and tinted stretch film?

Opaque films do not allow light through the film. Since light cannot pass through the film this creates a natural U.V. (Ultra Violet) protection to wrapped products. Opaque stretch films also offer a bigger protection from theft! Opaque films protect shipments while they are in transit by not allowing “would be” thieves to see the contents of your palletized loads.

Absolutely! You can view current online specials by clicking here.

Many people call stretch film “shrink” film. Is there a difference?

Yes, stretch film “stretches” and adheres to itself.

Shrink film needs heat applied to it and to allow it to “shrink” around the items being wrapped.

All Stretch Film Pallet Wrap is Not Created Equal

Can I get a quote on an 80 gauge stretch film? This is a question we hear several times a day. For years the go-to stretch film thickness has been 80 gauge. A true 80 gauge stretch wrap is a very good film for a variety of applications. It offers:

Excellent stretch capability

Heavy Duty Load Retention

Superior puncture and tear resistance

For years an 80 gauge pallet wrap was recommended for multiple applications in multiple industries. Even though quality can vary based on manufacturers, an 80 gauge film used to be a safe bet with most manufacturers. All of that has changed over the past several years. Rising resin costs have increased the price of true 80 gauge stretch film so much that manufacturers have been forced to find alternative resin formulas. All manufacturers including Berry Plastics, AEP, Sigma, and others now offer an alternative resin mixture or “equivalent stretch film”.

New-Resin

The new resin formulas are designed to offer a stronger thinner film that uses less petroleum to help reduce cost and environmental impact. These new formulas have produced a wide variety of stretch film names and gauges. The two we sell are hybrid and Ecowrap, other we have heard called Saturn, Galaxy, Extreme, Premier, and the list goes on. What do all of these names mean and how does it effect the end user?

The names of the equivalent stretch film do not mean much other than a way to track back to the manufacturer of the film. More than likely all of the films are made from a newer resin mixture and multilayered for added strength. It is very common for the equivalent films to be measured in microns instead of gauge. The equivalent films commonly come in 11, 13, 16, 19, and 21 microns. Just like the true gauged film, the equivalent pallet wrap varies in quality depending on the manufacturer. The thickness may be the same, but the stretchability, memory, and puncture resistance can vary dramatically.

How can you tell the quality of the film? The best way to understand the quality of film is to ask for a sample. This will give the opportunity to test the film with your loads. Different load weights, storage needs, transportation stress, and exterior load edges can require different stretch films.

Aside from the lower cost, new equivalent films do offer benefits over traditional true gauged stretch wrap. Some of the advantages include:

1. Reduced Energy Exertion- A stiffer film is not necessarily always a bad thing. When using a hand stretch film, stiffer film enables workers to exert less energy when applying to loads to reach maximum stretch potential. This can help to reduce work place injury.

2. Greener- The main purpose for manufacturers development of equivalent film is to use less petroleum and reduce costs. This also helps to reduce environmental impact. Making equivalent stretch film a “Greener” option.

3. Waste Reduction-  The thinner stiffer film enables workers to get maximum stretch potential in every revolution. This helps to ensure the full potential of the film is being used. Often with a true gauged film, workers are unable to reach maximum stretch potentials creating excessive waste.

There are substantial differences to an equivalent stretch film and a true 80 gauge stretch film. Both are great products to be considered when securing loads.

So if there are a wide variety of differences in the equivalent and trueQuestion-Mark gauged films, why do we always have requests for 80 gauge quote?

Stretch Film Pallet Wrap Misrepresentation

It is very common these days for sales representatives  to call an equivalent 80 gauge stretch wrap an 80 gauge stretch wrap. Why would they do that? There are several advantages. If you can pass an equivalent stretch film for a true 80 gauge film it increases profit margins considerably. Another great advantage is the ability to throw off competitors that are trying to offer a quote. It keeps competitors from offering an apples-to-apples quote. Even if a competitor figures out the customer is using an equivalent film, how do we know what thickness it is?

Roll Weight

Your best friend when trying to figure out what type of film you are actually getting is a good scale. Weighing an unused scaleroll of hand or machine stretch film is the first step in figuring out what type of film you are actually getting. Even if you are happy with the film, knowing what you have will give you the ability to obtain a proper quote in the future.

With the weight of the unused roll, you can use the formula below to see what the roll is supposed to weigh compared to what it does weigh.

Film Width x Film Thickness x Film Length x 12 / 30,000= Film Weight

A common example would be an 18″x1500′x80 gauge stretch film. We will use the formula to figure what the roll should weigh.

18x.80x1500x12/30,000= 8.64 lbs.

The film weight of a true 18″x1500′x80 gauge stretch film roll should weigh 8.64 lbs. The inner core will add up to an additional half pound. This formula will work with any film to find out what you are actually getting or not getting.

Polyolefin Shrink Bags are Here!

We have been working on offering polyolefin shrink bags for several months now. We have finally made them available online for our customers to purchase. U.S. Packaging & Wrapping has always wanted to offer a polyolefin bag because of the many benefits polyolefin offers.

Overall, polyolefin bags are superior bags over PVC shrink bags. They are more expensive, but worth the extra cost when wrapping certain items. Polyolefin is a softer film that offers more tear resistance and a better seal. Pof shrink bags are great for customers wrapping boxes and having issues with tearing on the corners of the boxes. The polyolefin shrink bags have more stretch and should not tear on box corners like a PVC shrink bag does.

One one the main reasons we are excited to offer polyolefin bags is because they are FDA approved for direct food contact. Our PVC shrink bags can not come into direct contact with food products. We have always offered polyolefin centerfold shrink wrap rolls, but the bags are often times easier and more efficient to use. We currently have several clients that use a centerfold polyolefin shrink wrap to wrap food products. Without an L-Bar sealer, sealing centerfold shrink wrap can often be tedious and time consuming.

Polyolefin offers several advantages over PVC shrink wrap. Below are a few benefits:

Softer Film

Stronger Seals

High Clarity

FDA Approved

Smoke & Odor Free

Ideal For Cold Storage

We offer quantity based discounts on all of our products including polyolefin shrink bags. Call us at 1-800-441-5090 to request a quote today!

Quantity Based Shrink Wrap and Stretch Film Quotes!

All of the packaging products we offer come with quantity based discounts. Some of the best quantity based discounts we offer can be found in our heat shrink wrap and stretch film products. A big reason discounts are large for these products is because of the weight and shipping cost related with these products.

Sure, we come down on price per case or roll the more you order, but freight costs is where the savings are. Below are a couple of recent orders we have had and how shipping was a large factor in the customers savings.

A recent order that shipped out called our sales department for a fright quote on 10 polyolefin rolls of heat shrink wrap. A 24 inch 75 gauge shrink wrap roll sells for $209.61  per roll on single rolls orders. The quote for 10 polyolefin rolls is below.
(10) Polyolefin Heat Shrink Rolls 24″ x 75 Ga.= $192 per roll + S & H $135 = $2055 total or $205.50 per roll delivered

A member of our sales team determined through the conversation that the customer was going through enough film to order 20 rolls if they could save more money. Below is the quote for 20 polyolefin rolls.

(20) Polyolefin Heat Shrink Rolls 24″ x 75 Ga.= $183 per roll + S & H $147= $3807 total or $190.35 per roll delivered

The difference in shipping cost was twelve dollars for double the amount of product. There was over a $15 per roll difference in the final price.

The customer went through plenty of the shrink film and had the storage space so they decided to order 20 rolls instead of order what they originally wanted quoted.

Even greater quantity discounts can often be found with stretch film. Because stretch film costs less per case or roll, the shipping costs have a greater effect on the delivered price. This is especially true in orders under 20 cases or 20 machine rolls. A recent customer call for a 5 roll quote on 20″x80 ga.x5000 ft. machine stretch film rolls. Our single roll website price is $59.20. Below is the quote.

(5) 20″x80 ga.x5000 ft. machine stretch film rolls= $57 per roll + S & H $76= $361 or $72.20 per roll delivered

Once again, our sales rep. determined through the conversation that the customer uses enough film to order more if it will save enough money. Below is the following two quotes that were given.

(10) 20″x80 ga.x5000 ft. machine stretch film rolls= $56 per roll + S & H $85= $645 or $64.50 per roll delivered

(20) 20″x80 ga.x5000 ft. machine stretch film rolls= $54.5 per roll +S & H $93= $1183 or $59.15 per roll delivered

The difference of the original 5 roll quote to the 20 roll quote is over $13 per roll. That is a much higher percentage of discount than the polyolefin example above.

One more thing to consider is we pay freight on all full pallet stretch film orders. That equals very large savings when you factor in the per case discount as well.

For any shrink wrap order stretch film order over 5 cases or rolls, we offer quantity quotes. Call our sales department at 1-800-441-5090 to request a quote.
