Vented Shrink Wrap Bags

Shrink wrap bags are some of our best selling products. Companies choose shrink bags for wrapping a variety of items ranging from batteries to gift baskets. When using shrink bags with a fully automated machine, most machines will have some type of hole punch to allow air to escape the bag after being sealed. After the seal is made shrink bags fill up with air that needs to be released before applying heat. The punch on the fully automatic machines allow that air to escape, promoting a better shrink fit.

Many of our online clients are start-up or small to medium operations. We love our online start-up clients and their desire for the American dream. Many of them use shrink wrap bags for a variety of products. Products that are commonly wrapped include: soap, batteries, magazines, books, cd’s, dvd’s, display items, and more.

People or companies new to shrink bags often have a hard time figuring out why they are trapping air inside of the sealed bag. If you seal the bags properly they should have an air tight seal, which will trap air inside of the shrink bag. Users could manually use a hole punch to allow air to escape, but we have something better.

Vented shrink wrap bags! All vented bags come with a small hole punched into them to allow trapped air to escape. Most of our vented shrink wrap bags come in the same sizes as the regular flat shrink bags we offer. Sizes range from 4″x6″ shrink bags to 12″x18″ bags.

Pallet Shrink Bags

Thick pallet shrink bags are great to be used for wrapping a variety of products. For cost and efficiency we recommend using a stretch film that is of adequate thickness for what you are wrapping. Even though stretch film is the more economical and efficient option, there are still some cases when heavy-duty pallet shrink bags are a preferred product.

Many of our clients that ship machinery or other products overseas prefer pallet sized shrink bags over stretch film. The heat shrink bags offer an added barrier of protection for those long overseas shipments. The bags are made from a PVC plastic and offer a great amount of shrink. They come in a variety of sizes to fit most pallet sizes and also include gusseted sides to help fit over irregular shaped objects.

All bags come on perforated rolls of 25 bags per roll. If you have any questions about any of our shrink products, call us at 1-800-441-5090 or visit our website. Click on the link above to go directly to our pallet shrink bag page.

Special Order Shrink Wrap Products

We offer a wide variety of both heat shrink wrap and shrink wrap/stretch film products online. We are fortunate to have manufacturers who make a large variety of products to offer our clients.

Unfortunately there are still shrink wrap products we do not offer that people are looking for. The majority of the time, we can have special order shrink wrap products made. Products of different widths, thicknesses, and lengths can often be made to suit your needs.

There are commonly a few issues that arise with special order shrink products. The first and most common issue is samples. If the requested product is not a stock item, we can not send out samples before the order. Understandably, people want a sample of the product before fulfilling the minimum order amount required.

Typically, we try to find the closest comparable item to send out for a sample before the custom order is placed. A great example is our opaque stretch film products. We only stock 80 gauge opaque stretch film and often get requests for a heavier gauged opaque stretch film. People want to be sure the heavier gauge is going to work before they order the minimum required.

The solution that often works in a situation like that is to send a clear 150 gauge stretch film to test the thickness. Along with the 150 ga. stretch film, we will send a sample of the black opaque 80 ga. This will let the buyer see how dark the opaque stretch film is and allow them to have a chance to test the durability of a 150 ga. stretch film.

That is normally the the best route to go to allow customers to try something close to what they will be purchasing. Most of our custom shrink wrap orders come with a 1 pallet minimum and up to a 2 pallet minimum order on some products. Feel free to call us at 1-800-441-5090 if you have any questions about a custom order. We will do our best to get you the products you need.

Vented Stretch Film Can Help Your Business!

Vented stretch film is an improved product to help a multiple business industries with load stabilization problems. Traditional cast stretch film is great for product load stabilization, but problems can arise when using cast stretch film with certain products. Businesses wrapping products that are still cold or warm when wrapping can experience condensation once the load is wrapped and stabilized.

Condensation inside of the palletized load can can promote molding, and damage products. The two options for overcoming this problem is allowing products to slowly cool or warm up before wrapping or use a vented film to allow the products to breathe and reduce condensation.

Allowing products to cool or warm up slowly can reduce production speeds and increase companies expenses. Vented stretch film offers great load stability while still allowing products to cool or warm up. Vented stretch film offers comparable stretch to traditional gauged stretch film, why allowing breathing room.

The same condensation issue can arise when wrapping pallets of products that have moisture when curing. Traditionally companies had to wait for the products to fully cure before palletizing the load. Traditional stretch film would hold the moisture in the load and not allow products to cure. With the die cut holes in vented stretch film, products can properly cure during transport.

Other moisture issues often arise when dealing with any produce loads. The trapped moisture on traditional stretch film promotes mold growth and can ruin products during shipment. Vented pallet wrap can help extend the life of produce products during transport.

We offer vented stretch film in: machine, hand stretch film with 3″ core, and hand stretch film with an extended core. Companies can experience breaking when using machine vented stretch film for the first time.

We recommend adjusting stretch machine settings to achieve the proper amount of stretch. Machine vented stretch film can offer a stretch of up to 200% which is traditionally more than standard stretch film.

Users of vented hand stretch film can often lose the end of the roll after wrapping a pallet. We recommend tying a knot when finished using the roll to help find the end of the roll. If you are having problems with load stabilization, try upgrading to a premium vented stretch film for maximum load retention.

80 Gauge Stretch Film, Are You Getting What You Pay For?

Everyday we give out stretch film quotes to people wanting multiple quantities shipped to a variety of places. In the process of giving quotes, we try to determine a couple of factors that can impact the stretch film products the client is currently getting.

Question 1. What type film are you using? Normally, width, thickness, and length are fine, but manufacturer can help as well.

Question 2. Does the stretch film adequately perform? Ideally we like for the client to already be happy with the film they have so we can offer them the same film or something equivalent to what they have been using. If the client says they want something thicker, we normally ask a few other questions to determine why they want to up-gauge. If the client is inquiring about down-gauging, we try to make proper suggestions and inform them about the differences they will see in the film by down gauging.

Finding another stretch film option is for another blog post. For this post we are going to assume the client is happy with the film they are using. They say they are using a 20″x5000′ 80 gauge machine stretch film and would like a skid quote. It is standard for us to ask where the product will be going to and then we give the quote.

If we give the quote for a skid of 20″x5000′ 80 gauge machine stretch film and our price per roll is dramatically off, then there may be a very common issue taking place. Stretch Film Impostors! We don’t claim to have the cheapest prices in all the land, but we do claim to have competitive pricing. If our quote comes in the ballpark of the price the client is paying, but we are still a little higher that is understandable. The problem comes when our prices are $5, $10, $15, & $20 per roll higher.

Red flag, chances are the client is not getting a true gauged film they asked us to quote them on. They are probably getting an equivalent film and being told it is an 80 gauge film. There is absolutely nothing wrong with equivalent stretch film. It is predicted there will be a complete shift in the industry, and everybody will eventually be using equivalent stretch films.  We love them, because often times we can save our clients money by using equivalent stretch films.

As much as we are all for equivalent stretch film, we do not feel it is right to give someone an equivalent film while claiming it is a true 80 gauge stretch film. How do you know if you are getting a true 80 gauge stretch film?

U.S. Packaging & Wrapping has you covered. It all has to do with the weight of an unused film roll you currently have. You will need a scale and a calculator to figure if you are getting a true gauged film.

Stretch Film Weight Equation= Film Width x Film Thickness x Film Length x 12 / 30,000= Film Weight

Example For 20″ x 5000′ x 80 gauge machine stretch film roll

20 x .8 x 5000 x 12 / 30,000= 32 Pounds

Remember this is for film weight. You will have to add anywhere from a half a pound to pound and a half with the core depending on the size of the roll.

This equation can work for any film thickness or width to give you an accurate idea of what you are getting. We have done a few common stretch film sizes for quick reference.

Stretch Film Weights

Roll Size                                                                        Film Weight                                Approx. Roll Weight Including Core

20″ x 5000′ x 80 gauge                                                  32 lbs.                                                          33-33.5 lbs

30″ x 5000′ x 80 gauge                                                  48 lbs                                                            49-50 lbs.

40″ x 5000′ x 80 gauge                                                  64 lbs                                                             65-66 lbs.

18″ x 1500′ x 80 gauge                                                  8.64 lbs.                                                          9.5 lbs.

15″ x 1500′ x 80 gauge                                                  7.2 lbs.                                                             8-8.4 lbs.

12″ x 1500′ x 80 gauge                                                  5.76 lbs.                                                          6.5 lbs.

If you weigh you stretch film roll and use the equation above to figure what the weight is supposed to be, the film weight should weigh within a pound of that weight. Don’t forget to allow some weight for the core.

An equivalent stretch film will weigh considerably less than true gauged film. Even on the smaller 12″ rolls it is over a pound difference, and several pounds difference on the larger rolls.

If you do weigh your stretch film roll and find that you have been getting an equivalent, there is nothing wrong with that. Especially if it is working for you. You may think about the company you are doing business with though. If they are willing to not tell you about that, what else are they keeping from you?

How To Shrink Wrap Your Products

Previously we wrote posts on this subject and offered some videos about getting started shrink wrapping. Even though we commonly work with large companies, we also enjoy working with start-up companies in trial stages and individual people wanting to shrink wrap a few items for storage protection. At U.S. Packaging & Wrapping LLC. we want to grow with our customers, so we welcome smaller start-ups and want to assist them with getting started on the right foot.

Almost everyone has heard of shrink wrap, but the process is not generally common knowledge. We have several products we offer that are referred to shrink wrap all the time. Most all of our stretch film products are called shrink wrap by our customers. In fact, we almost have as many people call for stretch film when they ask for shrink wrap as we do people who are actually looking for heat shrink wrap.

We will go down the steps for how to shrink wrap your products. Even though we will detail the steps to get started you may still have some questions. Feel free to call us and we will try our best to assist you.

1. Determine The Shrink Wrap You Need- There are three main questions you should ask to determine the type of shrink wrap you need. The questions all start with the products you are wrapping.

Question 1= How much does your product weigh? This will help determine the film type you need and the thickness you need. Polyolefin shrink film has a stronger seal and can be better for heavier products. We currently offer up to a 100 gauge polyolefin shrink wrap online. This shrink wrap should be strong enough to package products weighing up 35 and possibly even 40 pounds depending on edges of the product being wrapped and other factors. A 75 gauge is the most common film thickness and we recommend it for anything from 5 or 7 pounds up to 30 or 35 pounds. Our light 60 gauge shrink film is great for small light objects weighing up to 5 or 7 pounds.

PVC shrink film is a cost-effective film for multiple product weights. Currently, we only offer 75 gauge PVC shrink wrap online because of its versatility. It should be good for products weighing up to 30 pounds. Don’t be surprised by how thin the film is before heat is applied. Once heat is applied it becomes much stronger.

Question 2= What is the size of the object being wrapped? Length, height, and width are important measurements, but circumference of the object at its widest point can also be important. The measurement is important to help determine if a centerfold shrink wrap, a shrink tubing, or a shrink bag would be a better option for you.

Shrink bags are great and cost-effective for smaller products. The larger shrink bags can become more expensive than a centerfold shrink film of the same size. Shrink tubing is a great option for a variety of products that have similar circumferences.

Question 3= Are all objects being wrapped the same dimensions or do they vary in size? If all of the objects being wrapped are the same size, it is easier to determine the type of shrink wrap you need. Probably a shrink bag or a centerfold shrink film would be an ideal option.

If the products being wrapped slightly vary in dimensions, all three options may work. If the products being wrapped largely vary in dimensions, you may be able to choose a centerfold shrink film to fit the largest object being wrapped. By having a centerfold film to fit the largest object, it can also fit the smaller products being wrapped. Be aware that if the products dimensions are largely different there will be a lot of waste when packaging the smaller objects. The best option would be to figure the cost of buying two different sized centerfold rolls versus the amount of waste when buying only one larger roll.

We almost always recommend shrink tubing if you are wrapping objects of the same circumference, but different lengths. We also recommend shrink tubing when people need the shrink wrap to be used as a protective sleeve, but not seal the ends. People often use shrink tubing for wrapping products like candles and jars.

2. Find the Right Equipment-Once the type of shrink wrap type is determined, the type of equipment needed should be the next consideration. Below are a few questions to ask to help determine the right equipment.

Question 1= What type of shrink wrap did you choose? The sealer we recommend largely depends on the type of shrink wrap you choose. For shrink bags and shrink tubing we would recommend an I-Bar sealer, for centerfold shrink wrap we recommend an L-Bar Sealer.

Question 2= How much quantity will you be going through? If this is a one time deal for protecting products for storage, you can probably get away with no sealer or shrink gun and use a hair dryer. We don’t recommend this, but if price is a concern and overall aesthetics is not you could probably do it.

If you are a start-up and want to see if shrink wrap is the right option for wrapping your products for retail, we would recommend an impulse sealer and a heat gun. Be aware that if you have chosen to use a  centerfold shrink film, a impulse sealer will not be very efficient. It will give you an idea of how your fully packaged product will look with a proper seal though. The cost of an impulse sealer and shrink gun are very affordable to get things up and going.

If you already know you want to package your products with shrink film and will be doing a decent amount of output, you may need to consider a semi-automatic or fully automatic machine. We do not offer them online because of how much they cost and the amount of variables there are for determining the right machine. Please call so we can help you with the right option. Another possible option is a shrink tunnel for applying the heat. Shrink tunnels are far more efficient for applying heat than heat guns.

3.Package the Product-Now the hard stuff is out of the way, it is easy to package the product.

1. Place the product into the crease of the centerfold film, the shrink bag, or shrink tubing.

2. Seal the open ends of the centerfold, bag, or tubing. Some people do not choose to seal all open ends, that is individual preference. Depending on the sealing machine you choose, some trim excess film and seal all at once and others you will have to manually trim excess film.

3. Apply heat. Whether using a heat gun or tunnel, adjust heat properly and apply to the centerfold, shrink bag, or shrink tubing to shrink the film and allow it to conform to the product.

Of course there are several variables to shrink wrapping products and this article does not highlight a lot of the minor adjustments and tweaks needed when shrink wrapping. The higher output your operation becomes, the more technical questions and tweaks become.

This article is only a brief overview of how to shrink wrap, intended to inform people who are not familiar with the basics of the shrink wrap process.

Centerfold PVC Shrink Wrap Costs Per Foot

We have wrote several times about shrink wrap being an affordable packaging option. Companies have a variety of options to choose from when deciding packaging for their products. We have mentioned several times on this blog and on our website about the advantages of shrink wrap for packaging.

Shrink wrap is a great option due to the clarity and ability to display the product through the film. While allowing easy display of products, shrink wrap also gives a protective barrier against exterior elements. This barrier can help protect from dust, pollen, and moisture.

We have also mentioned in the past about shrink wrap being a great option for bundling products together. In almost every retail store you go in, you will see shrink wrap used to bundle products together. Many companies prefer it because of the ability to quickly and easily bundle the products at and affordable cost.

That brings us to reason for this post. In the past we have mentioned shrink wrap being a an affordable packaging option. We have never really taken the time to break down the cost of the shrink wrap we offer.

All of these figures will be based on base website prices. We offer quantity discounts on all of our shrink wrap and stretch film products so these figures will be even less cost if you decide to order a larger amount of film.

Portable Shrink Wrap I-Bar Sealer

We offer a variety of different shrink wrap machines, sealers, and shrink wrap heating elements to help in multiple stages of production. We sell several of different starter and intermediate shrink wrap systems. One shrink wrap sealer we would like to take some time to highlight, is the portable I-Bar sealers we offer.

We offer a 12″,18″,24″, and 32″ portable shrink wrap sealers online. These shrink wrap sealers are great for quick and easy sealing of a variety of product packages and sizes. The best part about the portable I-Bar sealers are the detachable sealing arm. This allows users to quickly and easily move the sealing arm to seal each side of the shrink wrap instead of having to rotate the package being sealed to the sealing arm. This process is much more efficient and helps to speed up sealing time.

The cord on the shrink sealer is an 8 ft. chord that allows for easy maneuverability when sealing. There is an adjustable temperature knob and timer to inform you when your products are sealed. These shrink sealers are more expensive than our shrink wrap systems we offer, but well worth the extra money if time and efficiency is a priority.

Feel free to order online or call us at 1-800-441-5090 if you have any questions.
